12mo. 6.25 x 4.25 inches. xx + [ii] +362 pp. Bound in brown stiff card boards with black titles and series list on rear board. Rough cut edges. Extremities worn, darkened and a little stained with rear hinge starting to crack; otherwise a very good copy. Early signature on first free endpaper. Illustrated by 4 engraved plates, including frontispiece, protected by tissue guards and by tables. An account of the Great Plague of London in 1665, by Daniel Defoe (c.1661-1731). It is based on extensive research and is related as if by an eyewitness. The work lies between history and a realist kind of fiction. First published 1722, this 1839 series edition was edited by Edward Wedlake Brayley (1773-1854), historian and topographer.
