8vo, in fours. 7.25 x 5 inches. xii + [ii] + 354 pp. Text in double columns. Bound in original brown cloth, gilt, with blind stamped borders enclosing decorative gilt title label; spine rebacked preserving the original. All edges gilt. Some wear to extremities and a few small stains. Occasional scattered foxing, but otherwise a very good copy. Botanical dictionary of plants known in Britain by Joseph Paxton (1802-65), Head Gardener of the Chatsworth Estate in Derbyshire where he pioneered the technology of iron framed glass greenhouses, the design he used with such great success at the Great Exhibition of 1851. Paxton was assisted in this work by the famous botanist and gardener, Professor John Lindley (1802-65).
