12mo. 5.5 x3.5 inches. xxv, including publisher's advertisement. pages, + [i] + 269 + [1] pp. Bound in contemporary quarter maroon cloth, gilt,with decorated spine, over marbled boards. Extremities worn including corners, edges and head and tail of spine. Damp stain on lower part of first free endpaper, frontispiece and vignette title. Front hinge just starting to crack and occasional scattered foxing, but otherwise a very good copy. Early inscription on front pastedown. Illustrated by engraved frontispiece and by vignette title. Old Testament Bible stories told through the Medium of twenty nine letters. Lucy Barton (1808?-98). The Preface and poems, Bible Days and Postscript on Ruth are by her father, Bernard Barton (1784-1849), known as the Quaker Poet, and a strong opponent of capital punishment. Both the father and daughter lived in Woodbridge, Suffolk, for much of their lives. First edition published 1831.
