FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 7.5 x 5.25 inches. 210 + [1] pp. + [1] pp. publisher's advertisement. Bound in original red cloth, with black outline titles and block on front board, in unclipped pictorial dust wrapper which has edge wear and tears, including chips at head and tail of spine. Extremities a little worn and sunned at edges, browning of flyleaves and some foxing of page edges and occasional elsewhere; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 9 light green monochrome plates, including frontispiece and seven double page with captions, and by 2 black and white text figures. The third post-war adventure of Sergeant Bigglesworth of the Special Air Police, the famous fictional pilot and flying ace character created by the former World War One pilot, Captain W. E. Johns (1893-1968). This story with an African setting, is the fortieth book in the chronological sequence of the life of Biggles, and the thirty fourth in order of publication. Illustrated by the artist, Leslie Stead (1899-1966).
