8vo. 7.25 x 5 inches. [xii] + 323 + [1] pp. + [12] pp. publisher's catalogue. All text in German Gothic script. Bound in original blue cloth, gilt with black blind stamped decorative panel on front board; spine in compartments with black lines decorated gilt. Patterned endpapers. A little wear to extremities, including head and tail of spine. Occasional scattered foxing, including edges, but otherwise a very good clean copy. Signature on verso of first free endpaper. Illustrated by map and 39 black and white photographic plates within borders. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. German language account of Ceylon, its inhabitants, topography, history and religion. By Emil Ludwig Schmidt (1837-1906). In 1889 he became associate professor of anthropology and ethnology at the University of Leipzig, carrying out his early research in North America and Egypt and in southern India and Ceylon in 1889-90.
