8vo. 6.5 x 5.25 inches. xix + [1] + 347 pp. Title page in red and black. Bound in original maroon cloth, gilt, with gilt block on front board. Rough cut edges. Extremities worn, including corners and head and tail of spine, which is sunned; otherwise a very good clean copy. 1902 signature on first free endpaper. Illustrated by frontispiece protected by tissue guard and by 449 engraved text figures. Decorated by title page vignette. The book covers the history and grammar of heraldry with chapters on flags, the orders of knighthood and the College of Arms. English Heraldry was first published in 1867 as a shorter companion to A Manual of Heraldry (1863). Both became standard works on the subject and Boutell's Heraldry has appeared in many subsequent editions. Charles Boutell (1812-77), archaeologist and antiquarian, was ordained priest in 1839 and held a number of different livings. He also published on monumental brasses and on arms and armour.
