FIRST EDITION. Large 8vo. 9.5 x 6.25 inches. x + 406 pp. Bound in original cream cloth, gilt, in unclipped pictorial dust wrapper by Charles Addams, which has sunned spine. Boards a little spotted and fore edge foxed; otherwise a very good copy. Loosely inset: Signed 1975 letter from author on New Yorker headed paper. Illustrated throughout by black and white photographs, drawings and cartoons. Decorated by title page publisher's device and text vignettes. Semi-autobiographical account of his years at New Yorker magazine (founded 1925) as a writer from 1936, by the journalist, author and critic, Brendan Gill (1914-97). It includes references to many famous writers and artists. First edition including a signed letter from the author.
