Illustrated by portrait frontispiece and by map in text. Biography of Thomas Masaryk (1850-1937) founding President of Czechoslovakia. It provides an account of his early years in Austria-Hungary, of his campaign for Czechoslovak independence, of the formation of the Czech Legion at the end of the First World War and its occupation of the Trans-Siberian Railway; also of the foundation of the democratic republic and his election as President in November 1918, continuing to hold that office until 1935. Detailed chronology at front of volume. By Edward William Polson Newman (1887-1967), an acquaintance of the Masaryk family. Sir Robert Bruce Hamilton Lockhart (1887-1970) was a diplomat, secret agent in Moscow in 1918 and was later posted to the British Legation in Prague, where he also came to know Masaryk.
