Small 8vo. 6.5 x 4.25 inches. xxii + 256 pp. Bound in later buff cloth with new endpapers; spine with red title label, gilt. A little wear to extremities and sunning of spine and board edges. Occasional scattered foxing, including preliminaries; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 2 engraved plates, including frontispiece, by folding plan and by tables. Decorated by vignette of arms of George Heriot on title page. George Heriot (1563-1624) was an Edinburgh royal goldsmith and philanthropist, whose legacy was the establishment in the city of Heriot's Hospital, later termed George Heriot's School in 1628 (opened 1659). The Appendix provides full details of Heriot's foundation.
