8vo. 7.5 x 5 inches. [4] + 114 pp. Bound in original green boards, gilt, with black title label, gilt, in unclipped pictorial dust wrapper (with publisher's advertisement on rear wrapper), which is lightly sunned and foxed with wear and chips at head and tail of spine. A little browning of flyleaves, but otherwise a very good clean copy. Illustrated by wood engravings, including title page vignette. Work of fiction by Naomi Royde Smith (1876-1964), earlier literary editor of the Westminster Gazette, in which capacity she promoted the work of several aspiring authors on their way to later success and from 1925 developed as a prolific writer herself. Her novel, Miss Bendix was first published in 1938, but was rewritten after her experience of the war and conversion to Catholicism in 1942. It relates the struggle of a gentlewoman to reconcile her knowledge of scientific truth, based on the sun and the stars, with the religious teaching she had previously found adequate. Illustrated by the wood-engravings of Hellmuth Weissenborn (1898-1982), German born painter and wood-engraver.
