Bound in contemporary maroon leather, both boards with gilt borders enclosing gilt vignettes; spine in compartments with raised bands, decorated gilt, with contrasting title label, gilt. All edges gilt. Inner dentelles. Black moire silk endpapers. A little foxing of flyleaves and title page, but otherwise a very good copy. 1848 inscription on verso of first free endpaper. Illustrated by engraved portrait frontispiece. Decorated by title page vignette. Attractive edition of the works of the dramatist, Jean Racine (1639-1699), one of the three great French playwrights of the seventeenth century. It includes the twelve verse plays (eleven tragedies and one comedy, 1664-91) and the plan of another. At the end are Poesies Diverses. A scarce title.
