4to. 9.75 x 7.75 inches. 235 + [5] pp., blank for notes, and colophon. Title page in red and black with red borders. Bound in quarter cream cloth over green boards with pictorial block; spine with black titles, contrasting title label and pictorial block. Spine darkened and occasional traces of foxing, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by colour frontispiece and 315 text figures, including colour and whole page. Decorated by vignettes, including title page and preliminaries and by opening headpiece and initial. A well illustrated and detailed historical study of playing cards, principally based on collections from the British Museum, Bodleian Library and the Worshipful Company of Makers of Playing Cards at the Guildhall, London. It examines examples from around the world, with a more detailed thematic description of English cards. By Henry T.
