8vo. 9 X 6 inches. viii + [ii] + 406 pp. Bound in original cloth boards, gilt, decorated with gilt and black blocks. Bevelled boards. Front hinge starting to crack and neatly repaired margin tear, p.391-2; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 12 hand coloured steel engravings, protected by paper guards, by title page vignette and by 44 wood engravings in text. Copy lacks 'Plain or Ringlets?' frontispiece plate. The seventh fiction title to appear by Robert Smith Surtees (1805-64) of Hamsterley Hall, Co. Durham. Extensively illustrated by the hand coloured steel engravings of John Leech (1817-64). First edition published 1860, after part publication, 1858-60.
