Bound in contemporary full calf with gilt borders; spine in compartments with raised bands, decorated gilt, with contrasting maroon morocco title labels, gilt. Headbands a little worn and extremities slightly rubbed, but a very attractive set in original condition. Craigie-House labels on front pastedown. Illustrated by engraved portrait frontispiece. Decorated by internal half title, head and tailpiece vignettes. Collected edition of the plays of Sir John Vanbrugh (1664-1726), Playwright and architect, with an account of his life as a dramatist. Vol. 2 includes both texts of his unfinished play, A Journey to London including the version of it, entitled The Provok'd Husband, completed by Colley Cibber (1671-1757), actor-manager, playwright and Poet Laureate. The collected edition was first published 1719. A fine set of Vanbrugh's plays in the original bindings, formerly in the library of Craigie House, Ayrshire (built c.1730). (ESTC T106357).
