Notes
The first, Douai, edition was published anonymously. The second, Dublin, edition of 1778, which appeared under the title, Remarks on Bower's Lives of the Popes, had authorship acknowledged to Alban Butler (1711-73), Roman Catholic priest and hagiographer. He was appointed Professor of Philosopher (and later Professor of Divinity and Vice President) at the English College, Douai in 1734 and the author of Lives of the Saints (1759).
