8vo. inches. 8.75 x 5.75 inches, [viii] + 215 pp. bound u=in original red cloth, gilt, in unclipped pictorial dust wrapper, with some edge wear and chips at head and tail of spine. Deckled edges. Extremities a little worn, but otherwise a very good copy. Red ink gift inscription on first free endpaper. Loosely inserted: article from New York, 2972 and press cutting from USA Today. 1986. Autobiographical account of working as a fireman in the South Bronx by a New York firefighter who served in the City, 1963-81. The book, by Dennis Smith (1940-2022) became a bestseller like his later study, Report from Ground Zero (2002), describing his work in rescue and recovery after the collapse of the World Trade Centre buildings.
