Extremities worn, including corners and head and tail of spine, and hinges starting to crack; otherwise a very good clean copy. Representative Men first published in 1850, consists of seven essays, based on lectures. The first assesses the Uses of Great Men, then follow six biographical studies: Plato; or, the Philosopher and New Readings; Swedenborg; or, the Mystic; Montaigne; or, the Skeptic; Shakespeare; or, the Poet; Napoleon; or, the Man of the World; Goethe; or, the Writer. Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-82) US essayist, lecturer and poet was at the centre of the transcendentalist group of writers living at Concord, Massachusetts.
