Notes
A pleasing handbook, obviously designed to encourage the wares of Harrod's cycle department. The section on cycle accessories has a charming art nouveau engraving, symbolising wheels and the preceding 'Ladies' Page,' by Rosamunde von Oelrichs, Author of a 'Woman on Wheels,' is full of essential advice: 'the small sacrifice to agility in wearing skirts should not be a great consideration to those who wish to look graceful and womanly, wearing of course, 'the cycling corset'; and on correct gear ratios, 'it looks absurd to see a woman's knees going at a mad rate whilst those of her man friend are revolving as calmly as if the whole place belonged to him. It looks for all the world, like a fussy little tug by the side of an Ocean Liner.' Gilbart-Smith is a pseudonym for Sir James Denham. A scarce item; COPAC records only three copies held by British libraries, including a second edition, also 1897.
