4to.9.75 x 5.75 inches. viii + 118 pp. Bound in original pale blue cloth, gilt, in unclipped pictorial dust wrapper with edge wear including chips at head and tail of spine, which is foxed. Some sunning of board edges and foxing of flyleaves; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 19 scraperboard plates numbered in text. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. 'The theme running through the stories in this book is the conflict between living creatures and the elements - the grey geese flying in from the snowy wastes of the Arctic, the duck finding sanctuary here after their journey across the sea, the salmon completing their mysterious life-cycle in our estuaries, and last, the Transatlantic airman battling against the hazards of storm and cloud' (dust wrapper). Charles Frederick Tunnicliffe (1901-79) was a renowned bird artist, but also illustrated numerous other books on wildlife and rural life.
