Some wear to extremities, including corners and head and tail of spine, with chip on lower edge of rear board.; otherwise a very good clean copy. Bookplate. Illustrated by portrait frontispiece protected by tissue guard and by 48 engravings in text, including whole page. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. The third work of fiction of the French born and educated novelist, Punch cartoonist and illustrator, George du Maurier (1834-96). Autobiographical in nature it relates the French schooldays of the hero who, after eyesight problems like the author, dreams that he has a female guardian spirit from Mars, Martia, who inspires him to become a successful author. Illustrated by the author and first published 1897.
