8vo. 6.5 x 4.25 inches. xx + 395 + [1] pp. colophon. Illustrated by eight plates, including frontispiece, some signed by Dalziel. Gerald Massey (1829-1907) was a working class poet, a Christian Socialist and Chartist, whose poem, The Ballad of Babe Christabel, achieved some popularity. It was first published with other poems in 1854 and the author's preface to its third edition precedes the poem here. The 'Biographic Sketch' of Massey is by Dr. Samuel Smiles (1812-1904, the author of Self-Help, 1859), reprinted from an article in Eliza Cook's Journal, 1851. A handsome decorative binding.
