8vo. 7.5 x 5.25 inches. [viii] + 320 pp. Bound in original green cloth, gilt, with blind stamped decorative borders enclosing front board title. Lower edges rough cut. Extremities worn, spine sunned, flyleaves browned and occasional traces of foxing; otherwise a very good copy. The novel is an account of a spiritual crisis undergone by an Anglican Bishop during the First World War, the actions he takes and how the crisis is ultimately resolved. The theme reflects a short lived religious conversion experienced by Wells during this period, also covered in another 1917 novel, God the Invisible King.
