12mo. 5.5 x 3.5 inches. 108 pp. Bound in contemporary half calf over marbled boards; spine in compartments, decorated gilt, with contrasting title label, gilt. All edges gilt. Extremities worn, including spine, which has small split at top and corners. Foxing of rear flyleaves, but otherwise a very good copy. 1838 Award of Merit inscription on second free endpaper. Illustrated by wood engraved frontispiece, text figures and vignettes, including tailpieces, title page and endpiece. A juvenile work featuring Jane, the young cottager, with an Isle of Wight setting, based on material collected by the author while living there. One of the religious tracts of the Rev. Legh Richmond (1772-1827), evangelical rector of Turvey, Bedfordshire since 1805. His other best selling titles were The Dairyman's Daughter and Annals of the Poor.
