4to. 10.25 x 7.5 inches. xii + 684 pp. Main text in double columns. Bound in original maroon cloth, gilt, in pictorial endpapers with small chips and tears at head of spine neatly repaired. Minor wear to extremities. Loosely inserted: publicity leaflet for title. Illustrated by text figures, many whole page, including portraits, title pages, facsimiles etc. Coloured pictorial endpapers. The Dictionary provides information on about twenty thousand cartographers, engravers and publishers active from the earliest times until 1900. The name entries include summary details of published titles. The first half of the work originally appeared in parts in the Map collectors' series published by the Map Collectors' Circle, 1965-75 and then in book form by Alan R. Liss Inc. and Meridian Publishing Company, New York/Amsterdam, 1979. Compiled by Ronald Vere Tooley (1898-1986), Antiquarian map dealer, authority on early maps and cartographers and joint founder of the Map Collectors' Circle in 1963.
