8vo. 9 x 6 inches. 256 pp. Bound in original green cloth with black titles, in unclipped pictorial dust wrapper, by Barnett Freeman, which has small loss at head of spine. a little wear to extremities, including sunning at head and tail of spine and light fore edge foxing. Slight damage to lower corner of rear endpapers; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 21 black and white pages of plates, including frontispiece. Biography of the US painter, James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), who spent much of his career in Paris and London, where he settled, by the art and fashion historian, James Laver (1899-1975), who was Keeper of Prints, Drawings and Paintings at the Victoria and Albert Museum, 1938-59. First edition published 1930. Wrapper by designer and illustrator, Barnett Freedman (1901-58), who worked as a war artist.
