8vo. 7.5 x 5.25 inches. 378 pp. Bound in pictorial cloth, with buff and black titles. Minor wear to extremities and slight browning of flyleaves; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by colour frontispiece, signed De Walton, by 4 black and white plates and by 6 sketch maps. Decorated by head and tailpiece vignettes, by initials and by publisher's device on title page. A relation of the activities of Robert Clive, 1755-60, including the campaigns against the Nawab of Bengal, culminating in his victory in the Battle of Plassey, 1757, and those of his forces against the French at Madras, Masulipatam and Pondicherry. The popular title by G. A. Henty (1832-1902), relating the origins of the British Empire in India, was first published in 1884, but this later edition may date from the period soon after 1890. Blackie became a limited company in that year.
